Tamil Family Lawyer in Markham and the GTA

Tamil-Speaking Family Lawyer Serving the Tamil Community in Markham, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, and Across the Greater Toronto Area

Family law matters are among the most personal and consequential legal issues a person can face. Decisions about your children, your home, your finances, and your future deserve to be made with a full and clear understanding of your rights and your options. When those decisions have to be made in a second language, in a legal system that may be unfamiliar, the process can feel even more difficult than it already is.

At Bani Family Law, we understand that experience. Associate lawyer Lemooriya Ananthan is a fluent Tamil speaker who has practised exclusively in family law since graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2021. She has helped members of the Tamil community in Markham, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, and across the GTA navigate the Ontario family law system with clarity, confidence, and the comfort of being able to speak freely in Tamil.

If you are looking for a Tamil family lawyer or a Tamil-speaking divorce lawyer in the GTA, our firm is here to help.

Why Language Matters in Family Law

Family law involves complex legal concepts, significant financial decisions, and deeply personal circumstances. To navigate it well, you need to understand not just what your lawyer is telling you, but why it matters and what it means for your specific situation.

When those conversations happen in a second language, the risk of miscommunication is real. A term that seems clear in English may carry a different weight in Tamil. An instruction that sounds simple may leave important questions unanswered. The emotional burden of a difficult situation is compounded when you are simultaneously translating.

Being able to speak with your lawyer in Tamil means you can describe your situation fully and accurately, ask the questions you actually have, and understand the answers without doubt. It means you can focus entirely on your matter instead of on the language.

About Lemooriya Ananthan

Lemooriya Ananthan is an associate lawyer at Bani Family Law. She graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2021 and was called to the bar in Ontario in 2023. Since then, she has practised exclusively in family law, working at boutique family law firms across the GTA as well as at a mid-sized firm in Ottawa.

Lemooriya has appeared before courts across Southern Ontario, handling high-conflict family and child protection matters involving family violence, parental alienation, and complex financial disputes. She regularly appears before the Superior Court of Justice and brings a strong advocacy background to every matter she handles.

Lemooriya takes a trauma-informed approach to family law representation. She understands how deeply personal these matters are and is committed to ensuring her clients feel informed, empowered, and supported at every stage of the process. She is also a member of the Women’s Committee of the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce.

Lemooriya speaks Tamil fluently and warmly welcomes Tamil-speaking clients. Learn more about Lemooriya on our team page.

Family Law Services for Tamil-Speaking Clients

Bani Family Law helps Tamil-speaking clients throughout Markham, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, and the GTA with a full range of family law matters, including:

Divorce and Separation

Whether you are considering separation for the first time or are already navigating the divorce process, we help you understand how Ontario law works, what your rights are, and what steps to take. We assist with both uncontested and contested matters and help clients reach fair, comprehensive separation agreements that address parenting, support, and property clearly. Learn more on our divorce lawyer Markham page.

Child Support

Both parents have a legal obligation to support their children financially after separation. We help clients understand how child support is calculated under the Federal Child Support Guidelines, how special and extraordinary expenses are treated, and what happens when income is disputed or circumstances change over time.

Spousal Support

Depending on the length of the marriage or relationship, the roles each partner played, and the financial situation of both parties, one spouse may be entitled to support after separation. We help clients assess entitlement, negotiate support arrangements, and address changes in circumstances when a variation becomes necessary.

Parenting Time and Decision-Making Responsibility

Parenting arrangements are often the most emotionally significant part of any family law matter. We help clients develop parenting plans that reflect the best interests of their children, and provide strong representation in contested parenting disputes, including cases involving family violence, parental alienation, and high-conflict situations.

Property Division and the Matrimonial Home

In Ontario, spouses are generally entitled to share equally in the net growth of property accumulated during the marriage, a process called equalization of net family property. The matrimonial home is subject to special rules regardless of whose name is on title. We help clients understand their property rights and reach fair resolutions.

Marriage Contracts and Cohabitation Agreements

A marriage contract or cohabitation agreement can provide important clarity and financial protection before or during a relationship. We draft these agreements carefully to ensure they are legally sound, clearly written, and reflective of your specific goals and circumstances.

Restraining Orders and Urgent Matters

When safety or urgent legal protection is needed, we act quickly. We assist clients with restraining orders and urgent court applications to ensure their safety and the safety of their children is protected without unnecessary delay.

Collaborative Family Law

Collaborative family law is a structured process in which both spouses and their lawyers work together to reach a resolution without going to court. It is often faster, less adversarial, and less costly than litigation, and it gives both parties more control over the outcome. We can advise you on whether collaborative family law is a good fit for your situation.

Understanding Ontario Family Law as a Member of the Tamil Community

The Ontario family law system has its own rules, processes, and timelines that may be different from what you are familiar with. Understanding how the system works is an important part of making informed decisions during a separation or divorce.

Common-Law Relationships and Property Rights

In Ontario, common-law spouses do not have the same automatic property rights as married spouses. If you have lived with a partner without marrying, your property rights on separation are different and in some cases more limited. This is an important distinction that we help clients understand clearly before making any decisions.

Religious Marriages and Ontario Law

Marriages performed in religious ceremonies, including Hindu, Christian, and other religious ceremonies conducted in Canada or abroad, are generally recognized under Ontario law if they were valid where they took place. We help clients understand how their marriage is treated and what legal rights and obligations flow from it.

Family Violence and Legal Protections

Lemooriya Ananthan takes a trauma-informed approach to family law and has direct experience handling matters involving family violence. If you or your children are in a situation involving abuse or family violence, there are legal protections available to you, including restraining orders and urgent parenting motions. We take these matters seriously and act quickly when safety is at risk.

What to Expect at Your First Consultation

Your first consultation is an opportunity for us to understand your situation and for you to understand your legal options. We use this time to:

  • Listen carefully to your family law matter and your immediate concerns
  • Explain your legal rights and options clearly, in Tamil if you prefer
  • Identify the most important next steps based on your circumstances
  • Answer your questions so you leave with more clarity and confidence
  • Discuss a practical strategy for moving your matter forward

You do not need to have documents prepared or decisions made before your first meeting. Many clients come to us at the very beginning of a separation, unsure of what the process involves or what their rights are. We will help you make sense of where things stand and what to do next.
